Five Netflix Shows To Watch During A Lockdown
Our Community Outreach Practitioner Cameron has taken to The Comedy Trust Corner to talk all things Netflix. Take a look at his top five picks to settle down, relax and have a much needed chuckle.
During times of isolation we need to look after our mental health and a great way to do that is to get your fix of comedy. I’ve compiled a list of my favourite stand up shows on Netflix that I recommend watching!
1. James Acaster: Repertoire James Acaster’s series of shows on Netlfix are masterful, I can’t pick one, just watch the series and you’ll see. I heard somewhere that he recorded all four over these shows over one weekend, which is outrageous. Not only that Acaster as a unique ability weave all the episodes together and offer us, as all great storytellers do, profound moments to think between the tightly knit very funny routines.
2. Dave Chapelle: Equanimity & the bird revelation Dave Chappelle has a number of shows on Netflix, but this is by far my favourite. The time Chappelle takes on stage whilst still keeping the audience on the edge of their seat is something every comedian should see. Nothing he says is out of place, it’s all very deliberate, which is why he gets away with saying things that other comedians wouldn’t even contemplate going near.
3. Katherine Ryan: Glitter Room In my opinion this is Katherine Ryan at her peak (so far). Tales of single motherhood and raising her child in the UK gives Katherine Ryan a point of view I haven’t seen from many comedians and it is hilarious. If nothing else, you need to hear her impression of her British child. I love this show.
4. Richard Pryor: Live in Concert If you have ever seen a stand-up comedian, at any moment in time, you have seen Richard Pryor. This show from 1978 has influenced everyone, he’s the king of storytelling and I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve watched this show, it never gets old.
5. Joan Rivers: Don’t Start With Me Speaking of old… Joan Rivers last ever special at the age of 78 is available to view on Netflix and it’s wonderful. She’s as outrageous and as energetic as ever and it’s amazing to see someone so late in their career commanding the stage as powerfully as they always have.
